Pick a coating before the salt

Best Ceramic Coating for Cars in Canada: UNO, DOS, TRÉ or STAK

October is the last real window to coat a car in most of Canada. Once the salt trucks roll out, your paint spends months under brine, slush and grit, and every wash in a cold driveway feels like a chore. A coating applied now is what makes those winter washes faster and keeps the grime from bonding to bare clear coat.

The hard part is choosing. If you are searching for the best ceramic coating for cars, the honest answer depends on three things: how many years you want, how much time you have for prep, and how your car actually lives from November to April. hyperCLEAN makes four coatings that cover those situations, and we carry all of them in Kitchener.

What separates UNO, DOS, TRÉ and STAK

UNO, DOS and TRÉ are the numbered line. The name tells you the rating: UNO is a 1 year coating, DOS is rated for 2 years, and TRÉ for 3 years. All three go on as a single layer with the same basic routine, 10 to 15 drops on the applicator and overlapping straight passes in a 2 × 2 ft area.

STAK is a different tool. It is a sprayable ceramic coating that can coat an entire car in 15 to 20 minutes. Used on its own it lasts a few months, and it also works as a topper over a multi year coating because it bonds to paint and to existing ceramic coatings.

Choosing by years of protection

Start with how long you plan to keep the car and how often you are willing to recoat. If you lease, or you just want to try coating for the first time, a 1 year product makes sense. If the car is staying in the family for a while, the longer ratings start to pay off.

UNO is described as the easiest and most forgiving coating hyperCLEAN makes, and it is designed to be topped off often. DOS steps up to 2 years with high shine and a 9H hardness rating. TRÉ is the workhorse of the line, rated for 3 years of protection against chemicals, swirls, UV damage and corrosion. Corrosion and chemical resistance are the two that matter most on a car that sees salted roads every week.

Prep time is the real cost of a coating

The bottle is the easy part. UNO, DOS and TRÉ all call for full prep before the first drop goes on: decontaminate the paint with a clay mitt and Fuego ($28.99), then polish by hand or machine if defects or marring remain. A coating locks in whatever is under it, so swirls you leave behind stay there for the life of the coating.

All three numbered coatings need to stay dry for 12 to 24 hours after application, and you should hold off on washing for 7 to 14 days. In October that means watching the forecast and keeping the car inside.

STAK still needs a clean surface. Wash, decontaminate, and make sure the paint is free of oils or residues. The application itself is where you save time, since you spray, spread, let it sweat, and buff.

How your car lives in winter decides the rest

A car that sits in a heated garage and comes out on dry days can get away with less. A commuter parked outside who drives through every storm needs the toughest shield you are willing to apply and maintain.

DOS is the one hyperCLEAN points at Canadian winters directly. The thicker layer and hardness rating are there for resistance, and the slower beading gives you more working time when the garage is cool. If you are coating late in the season, that working time matters. Our guide to DIY ceramic coating in cold weather covers what the space itself needs.

Whichever base coat you pick, the description for STAK is blunt about it: coatings take more of a beating in Canadian weather, and even the strongest ones need more maintenance. A STAK layer over your base coat is how you keep it ready for salt and slush between full recoats.

The best ceramic coating for cars in our climate, by situation

If this is your first coating and you want room for mistakes, pick UNO. If you drive through every winter and want two seasons before recoating, pick DOS. If the car is a keeper and you want the longest rating in the line, pick TRÉ. If you need protection on the car this weekend, or you already have a coating that needs topping up, pick STAK.

One rule applies to STAK in particular. Rinse the sprayer right after use, because STAK is a true ceramic coating and will harden in the sprayer.

FAQ

What is the best ceramic coating for a beginner?

UNO is the one hyperCLEAN describes as the easiest and most forgiving to apply. It is a 1 year coating designed to be topped off often, which suits a first attempt. The 50mL bottle is $72.99.

Can I put STAK over UNO, DOS or TRÉ?

Yes. STAK uses hyperCLEAN's Flexible Bonding Technology to adhere to paint and to any existing ceramic coating. It is meant to be used as a topper for multi year coatings.

How long before I can wash a new ceramic coating?

For UNO, DOS and TRÉ, keep the car dry for 12 to 24 hours after application. Wait 7 to 14 days before the first wash.

Do I need to polish before ceramic coating?

Only if defects or marring remain after decontamination. Clay and Fuego come first, then polish by hand or machine where the paint needs it.

Which ceramic coating lasts the longest?

Of these four, TRÉ carries the longest rating at 3 years. DOS is rated for 2 years, UNO for 1 year, and STAK for a few months on its own.

Pick the coating that matches the car you actually drive in February, prep it properly, and give it the full cure before the roads turn white. The rest of the season gets a lot easier.
