By the middle of salt season, your floor mats are doing more work than any other part of the car. Every trip, slush and road salt come off your boots and land on the mat. The heater melts it, it dries into white rings, and the next storm adds another layer on top.
If you are working out how to clean car floor mats when the driveway is icy and the hose is coiled up for the winter, start with what your mats are made of. Rubber and carpet need different products, different brushes and very different drying plans.
Everything below can be done in a garage, a laundry room or a basement. It uses three hyperCLEAN products we carry: TRX for rubber, and Complete and Enzyme for carpet.
Rubber or carpet: sort out what you are cleaning first
Rubber and all weather mats are the easy case. They trap slush in their channels and hold it there, so the salt sits on the surface as a crust. Nothing soaks in, which means the job is mostly about loosening that crust and rinsing it away.
Carpet mats absorb. Salty meltwater wicks into the fibres, dries, and leaves a stiff white tide line that comes back every time the mat gets wet again. These mats need a fabric cleaner, patient agitation, and a real plan for drying.
Pick the right product for each mat using the tabs below.
Best for
TRX is a heavy duty tire, rubber and exterior cleaner that uses surfactants instead of a harsh degreaser.
Start here
Complete is a triple action fabric cleaner that leaves a protective layer and targets damp, musty smells.
Add this
Enzyme is the pretreatment step in the two step carpet system, used before Complete on tough, embedded stains.
How to clean car floor mats made of rubber
Carry the mats out flat so the pooled meltwater does not spill, tip it out, then knock the mats against a wall to shake loose the grit.
Set them on the garage floor, in a laundry tub or in a bathtub. Mix TRX at 4:1 for a mat that just looks dusty, or go to 1:1 when the salt has built up into a thick crust in the channels. Spray the whole surface evenly and give it a short dwell.
Scrub with a stiff brush, working across the grooves and then along them so the bristles reach the bottom of each channel. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear, then towel dry. Leave rubber mats bare once they are clean. Any slick dressing near the pedals is something to avoid.
How to clean carpet floor mats and lift the salt
Start dry. Vacuum the mat hard from both directions, then brush it gently in one direction so the fibres lie the same way and the finish comes out even.
Lightly spray Complete across the entire mat, including the clean looking edges. Treating only the white spots tends to leave a patchy mat. Let it dwell briefly, agitate with an upholstery brush, then wipe with a clean microfiber towel to pull the lifted grime out.
Complete is ready to use, so there is nothing to mix. If you want a deeper look at salt marks on the car's own carpet as well, our guide on removing salt stains from car carpet and floor mats covers that side of it.
When to bring in Enzyme for set in stains
Old salt rings and coffee spills often need Enzyme first.
Spray Enzyme straight onto the stain, covering well past its edges. Give it a short dwell so it can break down oils and odour causing compounds, then agitate gently with a soft brush. Blot with a microfiber towel, or pull it out with a wet/dry vacuum or extractor if you have one.
Follow up with Complete across the whole mat. That is how the two step system is meant to work, and it helps the treated area blend in with the rest of the carpet.
Drying floor mats indoors when it is freezing outside
Rubber mats are simple: towel them off, stand them on edge for a while, and they are ready. Carpet mats hold water deep in the backing, and in a cold garage that water can sit for a long time.
Take out as much moisture as you can before you hang anything. A wet/dry vacuum is the best tool for this. Without one, roll the mat inside a dry towel and press down on it, then repeat with a fresh towel.
Hang carpet mats vertically over a drying rack, a sawhorse or a basement railing so water drains toward the bottom edge. Point a fan at them and keep air moving across both sides. Keep them a safe distance from space heaters and baseboard heat, since direct heat on a rubber backing is a gamble.
Only put them back once the backing feels dry to the touch. A damp mat sitting on the car's carpet is how a musty smell and foggy windows start. Once the mat is fully dry, vacuum it one more time to lift any leftover residue.
Car floor mat cleaning FAQ
What is the best way to clean rubber car mats in winter?
Knock off the loose grit, spray a diluted cleaner like TRX, scrub the channels with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. Use 4:1 for light dirt and 1:1 for heavy salt crust. Dry the surface with a towel before the mats go back in.
Can I put carpet floor mats in the washing machine?
Check the mat maker's care instructions first, because many mats have a rubber backing. Cleaning by hand with Complete and a brush gives you more control over how wet the mat gets, which matters a lot when it has to dry indoors.
How do you get white salt stains out of carpet floor mats?
Vacuum first, then spray Complete over the whole mat, agitate and wipe with microfiber. For old, set in rings, pretreat with Enzyme, blot or extract, then follow with Complete.
How long do carpet mats take to dry indoors?
It depends mostly on how much water you leave in them. Extracting with a wet/dry vacuum and hanging them vertically in front of a fan makes the biggest difference. Wait until the backing feels dry before putting them back.
Do I need both Enzyme and Complete?
Complete works as a one step cleaner for regular dirt and light salt. Enzyme is meant for the deepest stains and goes on first, with Complete after it. If your mats have old rings, keeping both on the shelf is worth it.
The next storm is coming either way, and regular mat cleaning keeps the salt from piling up all winter. Pick the product that matches your mats, give the carpet ones a proper drying day, and the floor of the car stays a lot easier to live with until the snowbanks are gone.
