Trim Restorer Guide: Keep Black Trim From Going Grey This Winter

Black plastic trim looks fine in September. Then comes a season of brine spray, slush thrown up by the car ahead, and a wash bay you only visit on the odd mild weekend. By April the bumper trim, mirror caps and window surrounds have gone from black to a tired, patchy grey.

Most people start shopping for a trim restorer once that damage is showing. The better time is now, in the fall, while the plastic is still dark and the driveway is still dry enough to work on. The product page for hyperCLEAN TRIM says it directly: in Canada, it is common for black plastics to go gray within a single winter.

What a trim restorer does on black plastic

Trim restorer is a loose term. On store shelves it covers dressings that darken plastic, cleaners that lift grime, and coatings that bond to the surface. They all change how trim looks, and they work in different ways.

The hyperCLEAN approach splits the job into two products. TRIM Cleaner ($28.99) is made to clean, restore and protect plastic, vinyl and rubber trim, and it is formulated to cut through the oily film and contamination that builds up on those materials. TRIM ($72.99) is a ceramic coating made for trim. Its description explains that ceramic coatings form a chemical bond with the surface they go on, so you cannot just put any regular coating on plastic.

Used together, the description says, the two revive and protect trim to its intended colour and texture. The cleaner preps, the coating seals, and the order matters.

Timing matters too. The TRIM Cleaner description lists what trim is up against here: salt, snow, UV exposure and rapid weather swings. Road film is the part people overlook. Every drive on a salted highway leaves a greasy, salty layer on everything low on the car, and textured plastic gives it plenty of places to sit. By the time it has had a few months to work, you are fixing damage instead of preventing it.

TRIM is described as sealing out oxidation and road film before they can even start. That only helps if the coating goes on before the winter does, which is the whole case for doing this job in the fall.

Choosing a trim restorer for the trim you have

Start by looking at the trim in daylight. If it is still dark and even, you are in the prevention stage. If it looks dull, filmy or blotchy, it needs a proper clean before anything goes on top.

Step one: deep clean the plastic

Wash the car first so you are not grinding loose grit into the plastic. Then work one piece of trim at a time. Shake TRIM Cleaner well, spray it onto a microfiber towel, a scrubbing pad or the trim itself, and work it in with light to medium pressure. Wipe the excess off with a clean, dry microfiber.

The lower bumper and the plastic around the wheel openings usually carry the most film. Go over those sections again. Check your towel as you go, and when it comes away clean, that section is ready.

Then let everything dry completely. Both product descriptions are clear that the coating goes on once the surface is fully dry. Give seams, badges and textured sections extra time, since water hides there.

Step two: seal it with a trim coating

Shake the TRIM bottle well, which activates the formula. Put a few drops on an applicator pad and spread a thin, even coat over the trim. Work one small section at a time.

Leave each section 5 to 10 minutes so the coating can settle and bond. Then take a clean microfiber and gently level the finish, removing any excess. Work carefully along the edges beside paint and glass, or mask them with painter's tape before you start.

The last step is the one people rush. Keep the car away from water for 12 to 24 hours so the coating cures for maximum durability. Check the forecast before you open the bottle.

When to coat trim before winter

The window sits between the last warm weekends and the first salt run. Once the trucks are out, the trim starts collecting salty film again, and finding a dry day long enough to wash, clean, coat and cure gets harder every week.

Line up three things before you start. A dry day with no rain in the forecast for the cure period, a garage or shaded spot to work in, and enough time to do each step without hurrying. Go around the whole car while you have everything out, since mirror caps, window surrounds and roof rails take the same beating as the bumpers.

Once the coating has cured, winter care is mostly about washing. Get the salt off the lower half of the car when you can, and use a gentle wash that does not scrub hard at the trim. If the hose is already put away, our guide to waterless vs rinseless washing when the hose is frozen covers the options.

In spring, look the trim over in good light. If film is building up again, TRIM Cleaner will lift it, and you can decide whether the trim needs another coat before summer.

Trim restorer FAQ

Do I need a trim restorer if my trim is still black?

Still black is the best time to protect it. TRIM is described as sealing out oxidation and road film before they can start, so it belongs on trim that has not faded yet. Clean first with TRIM Cleaner, then coat.

Can I use a regular ceramic coating on plastic trim?

The TRIM description says you cannot just apply any regular coating to trim, because ceramic coatings form a chemical bond with the surface they are applied on. TRIM is the hyperCLEAN coating made for that job.

How long does trim coating need to stay dry?

Avoid water for 12 to 24 hours after applying TRIM. That cure time is what gives the coating its maximum durability, so plan the job around a dry forecast and skip washing in that window.

Can I coat trim that has already started to fade?

Clean it thoroughly with TRIM Cleaner first, repeating on heavily contaminated areas, and let it dry fully before coating. The descriptions pitch the pair as a way to revive and protect trim to its intended colour and texture. Cracked or broken plastic is a repair job, and a coating will not change that.

An hour or two on a dry fall afternoon is enough to clean and seal the trim on most cars. Do it before the first salt, and the plastic heads into winter already sealed instead of waiting to be rescued in April.
